Brass vs. Crystal Chandeliers — Which to Choose

Brass and crystal are the two great traditions of decorative lighting, and choosing between them shapes the entire mood of a room. The honest answer is that many of the finest chandeliers use both — a brass frame holding crystal drops — but understanding what each material brings helps you decide where to land. Here is how they compare.

Brass: warmth and character

Brass gives off a warm, golden light and a sense of solidity. As a metal it can be cast, forged and sculpted into almost any form, which is why brass chandeliers range from clean modern rings to ornate foliate designs. Its light is diffused and inviting rather than dazzling — it makes a room feel warm and lived-in. Brass also ages gracefully: left with a living finish it develops a soft patina over the years, deepening in character rather than wearing out.

Crystal: sparkle and formality

Crystal does something brass cannot: it refracts light. Each cut facet catches and scatters illumination into points of brilliance, which is why crystal chandeliers feel glamorous and formal. They are the natural choice for a grand dining room, a hotel lobby, or any space where you want a sense of occasion. Crystal also reflects the colours around it, so it sits beautifully against both deep, dramatic walls and pale, airy ones.

Light and atmosphere

If you want a room to feel warm, intimate and grounded, brass leans that way. If you want it to feel bright, sparkling and elevated, crystal delivers. A practical tip: brass pairs especially well with warm-toned bulbs (around 2700K) to enhance its glow, while crystal can take a slightly cooler, brighter bulb to maximise the sparkle of the facets.

Style and setting

Maintenance

Both are easy to live with. Brass needs little more than regular dusting with a soft, dry cloth; a living finish is meant to patina, while a lacquered finish stays bright with minimal care. Crystal benefits from an occasional gentle clean to keep the facets sparkling — switch off the power, wipe each piece with a soft, slightly damp cloth, and dry immediately. Avoid abrasive or ammonia-based cleaners on either material.

The best of both

You do not always have to choose. A great many of our pieces marry a hand-finished brass frame with crystal or glass drops, giving you the warmth and craftsmanship of metal alongside the sparkle of cut crystal. It is often the most flexible choice — formal enough for a dining room, warm enough for a living space.

How to decide — Want warmth, character and a handcrafted feel? Brass. Want sparkle, formality and a sense of occasion? Crystal. Want both? A brass frame with crystal drops.
