In the eighteenth century its glassworks supplied the courts of Europe with chandeliers and wall lights hung with cut crystal, a style often linked with the Empress Maria Theresa. A small glass dish, or bobeche, was set under each candle to catch the dripping wax; cut with scallops and hung with drops, it also caught the flame and spread its light.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis sconce is made in that spirit. A cast brass backplate, crowned with a small scrolled crest, carries five curving arms: two set high at the sides and three lower in front.
