The Directoire style, named after the government of the day, borrowed directly from the buildings of ancient Greece and Rome: straight lines, crossed lattices, dentilled cornices and flame-topped urns. It sat between the ornament of the old court and the grandeur of the Empire that followed, and its quiet, ordered look has stayed in classical interiors ever since.

This wall light is drawn from that vocabulary. Its tall backplate is a slim brass frame like a pilaster, crossed by an X and centred with a small rosette. It is capped by a cornice with a dentil band and a little flame urn, and closed at the base by a stepped plinth and an acorn drop. From a round boss, two S-scroll arms curl out to drip pans and plain brass candle sleeves, each under a tapered ivory linen shade edged with a fine tan band. The brass is finished in a warm, satin antique gold.

What makes it distinctive

Architectural backplate: An X-frame pilaster with a rosette, dentilled cornice, flame urn and acorn drop.

Two scroll arms: S-scroll candle arms with drip pans and brass candle sleeves.

Linen shades: Tapered ivory linen drums with a fine tan edging, for a soft, warm light.

Made to order in India: From Delhi Brass, a fourth-generation lighting and decorative metalwork company.

Materials & dimensions

Material: Brass, with linen fabric shades

Finish: Antique brass

Height: 23 inches / 58.4 cm

Width: 16 inches / 40.6 cm

Projection from wall: 7.5 inches / 19.1 cm

Light source: Two E14 bulbs (not included)

Warranty: 2 years

Product code: 10133

Finding the right spot

It looks best in pairs: either side of a mirror above a console, flanking a fireplace or a bed, or along a hallway.
