Wall Lights for the Bedroom

Bedside wall lights free the nightstand and put the light where you actually read, which is the one thing a table lamp beside a bed rarely manages.

What height to mount a bedside wall light

Mount the centre of the fitting 48 to 52 inches from the floor, or roughly 24 to 30 inches above the mattress. The aim is for the bottom of the shade to sit just above shoulder height when you are sitting up, so light falls on the page and not in your partner's eyes.

Swing-arm or fixed

A swing-arm is worth it beside a bed, because it lets one person read while the other sleeps. A fixed sconce is cleaner on the wall and better where the bed position is settled and the light is mostly ambient.

Spacing and pairs

Centre each fitting over its own nightstand rather than measuring from the bed, and keep the pair at matched height. We finish pairs from the same batch of metal so the colour agrees.
