The acanthus leaf has crowned classical columns since ancient Greece, and in the eighteenth century the bronze makers of France and England made it the signature of their finest chandeliers. They often set it around a pinecone or pineapple, a symbol of welcome and hospitality in Georgian houses, and gave their arms fine reeded grooves borrowed from classical columns. A century later, fabric shades were added to such chandeliers to soften electric light, turning a formal piece into a warm and intimate one.

This chandelier brings those elements together. Its central column is crowned with a spray of curled acanthus, then swells into a pinecone cut with a diamond lattice and wrapped in tall acanthus leaves. It rests in a round dish edged with drooping leaves, above a turned baluster and a small pinecone drop. Nine curving arms with fine reeded grooves rise from the dish, six in an outer ring and three set higher within, each ending in an acanthus cup under a tapered ivory fabric shade. Three small urn finials with flame tops stand between the arms. The brass is finished in a warm, satin antique gold.

Finding the right spot

Hang it in a formal living room, over a dining table or in an entrance hall, with a ceiling of at least 10 feet. As a guide, it suits a room of about 18 by 20 feet or larger. Over a dining table at least 84 inches long, keep the bottom 30 to 36 inches above the tabletop; over a seating group or in a walkway, about 7 feet above the floor. The chain is cut to your ceiling, so tell us the drop you need. Use warm white (2700K) LED bulbs, and add a dimmer.

Care

Switch off and let the bulbs cool before cleaning. Dust the brass with a soft, dry brush to reach into the leaves and reeding. Freshen the shades with a soft brush or a vacuum on low with a brush attachment. Avoid metal polish, abrasives and chemical cleaners, which will strip the antique finish.
