Lighting is easier to choose room by room than category by category. The size rules, mounting heights and finishes that work over a dining table are not the ones that work beside a bed. Pick the room you are lighting and each page carries the measurements for it.
Living room lighting
- Chandeliers for the Living Room — sized to the room, hung with seven feet of headroom.
- Wall Lights for the Living Room — hung in pairs at eye level to flank a sofa or a fireplace.
- Floor Lamps for the Living Room — reading height beside an armchair, taller for an ambient corner.
Dining room lighting
- Chandeliers for the Dining Room — sized to the table rather than the room, hung 30 to 36 inches above the top.
Bedroom lighting
- Wall Lights for the Bedroom — bedside sconces and swing-arm readers that free the nightstand.
- Table Lamps — shade at shoulder height when you are sitting up in bed.
Foyer, stairwell and entrance lighting
- Foyer Lighting — entrance and double-height stairwell fittings, with hanging heights for each.
- Ceiling Lights — chandeliers, lanterns and pendants, with guidance by ceiling height.
- Hanging & Pendant Lights — tall lanterns that read from two storeys in a double-height foyer.
Outdoor and garden lighting
- Garden & Gate Lighting — pillar lanterns, bollards and path lights, sealed and finished for exterior use.
Not sure where to start?
Most rooms want light in layers rather than one bright fitting overhead: something on the ceiling for the general light, something on the walls for the corners, and a lamp for the seating. If you would rather talk it through, our team can work from a floor plan or a photograph of the room.
