The design

The Birdcage Botanical Hanging Light borrows from the ornamental bird cages of 19th-century European conservatories and Indian garden pavilions, where cages were made as much for display as for use. Here the cage becomes the lamp. A domed frame of slender vertical bars, held by two rings, opens at the bottom to a perch bar. On it sit two birds, facing each other, with more leaves trailing below. Cut-metal leaves climb the bars, and the bulb hangs in the centre like a lantern inside the cage.

The finish is a hand-applied antique gold patina over a dark bronze base, rubbed back so the highlights catch the light. A few leaves carry a faint blue-green tint, like weathered garden metalwork.

What makes it distinctive

• Open, airy cage. The thin bars throw a fine pattern of light and shadow on the ceiling and walls.
• Hand-finished detail. Each leaf and bird is cut and fixed by hand, so no two pieces are exactly alike.
• Exposed bulb. It looks best with a vintage filament bulb, which becomes part of the design.

Placement

Made for a garden room, verandah or sunroom, where it echoes the plants around it. It also works over a console in a hallway, beside the bed in place of a bedside lamp, or as a pair over a breakfast table. Hung over furniture, allow about 30–36 in between the base of the cage and the tabletop. In a walkway, keep the base at least 7 ft from the floor. For covered outdoor areas, keep it out of direct rain.

Care

Dust with a soft, dry cloth. Do not use water, abrasive pads or chemical cleaners. They will damage the patina.
