Ceiling lights carry the general light in a room — the layer everything else is built on top of. This page gathers everything we make that hangs from a ceiling: chandeliers, lanterns and pendants in hand-cast brass, forged iron and antique glass.
Ceiling height decides most of it. Under nine feet, a close-mounted fitting or a short-drop pendant keeps the room from feeling pressed down. Between nine and twelve feet, a chandelier or a hanging lantern has room to read properly. Above twelve feet — a double-height foyer, a stairwell, a verandah — you want a tall multi-tier fitting, hung so its lowest point sits level with the first-floor landing.
A ceiling fitting on its own rarely finishes a room. Treat it as the base layer and add wall lights or lamps for the corners and the seating. In a living room, plan for the ceiling fixture to give roughly half the light and let the other layers do the rest. It is a warmer result than one bright fitting overhead, and it is how a room reads at night.
A living room takes the widest fitting the ceiling height allows. A bedroom is better served by something softer and lower in output, with the reading light handled by sconces or lamps. A foyer is the one place to go deliberately large — it is the first room anyone sees, and it usually has the height to carry it.
Antique brass and aged finishes sit comfortably in older houses and forgive dust, which matters on something you cannot easily reach. Polished brass and crystal suit formal rooms and reward a dimmer. Seeded and antique glass hides the lamp inside, worth having at any height where the fitting is seen from below.
