The scallop shell was one of the favourite motifs of the Baroque and Rococo periods, carved into furniture, mirrors and plasterwork from Versailles to the palaces of Europe. Paired with hanging crystal, it became a classic way to make a chandelier look like a jewelled crown.

This chandelier is built around that idea. A ring of cast brass shells in an antique finish forms the crown, set on a band of foliate relief and carried by scrolled arms and a tall shell finial. Below it hangs a drum of long crystal prisms with a skirt of crystal beads, finished with a turned brass drop at the base. When lit, the light breaks through every prism.

Finding the right spot

At 21 inches across, it suits a foyer, a dining table for four to six, a formal drawing room or a large bedroom. Hang it over a dining table so the bottom sits about 30–36 inches above the tabletop, or at least 7 feet above the floor in a walkway. It works best with a ceiling height of 9 feet or more. Use warm white (2700K) bulbs.

Care

Switch off and let the bulbs cool before cleaning. Dust the brass with a soft, dry cloth. Clean the crystals with a barely damp cloth, then dry them at once. The antique finish is meant to deepen with time, so do not polish it back. Avoid abrasive pads and chemical cleaners.

This chandelier is made to order, and the size, drop and finish can be adapted to your room. It takes five E14 bulbs, which are not included, and comes with a 2-year warranty. Production takes 10–14 days, followed by 4–6 days for delivery.
