Where to mount wall lights in a living room
Mount the centre of the fixture 60 to 66 inches from the floor — roughly eye level standing. A pair flanking a sofa, a fireplace or a run of shelving does more for a long wall than a single fitting in the middle. Where sconces run along a wall, space them six to eight feet apart so the pools of light overlap.
Uplight, downlight or both
An upward-facing sconce bounces light off the ceiling and lifts the whole room. A downward shade puts a defined pool on the wall and suits artwork or a reading chair. Fittings that do both are the most forgiving if you are only installing one pair.
Finishes that suit a living room
Polished brass and gilt read formal and reflect well against lighter walls. Antique brass and patina sit more easily with wood and stone. Blackened iron holds its own against white walls and contemporary joinery.
