What height floor lamp for a living room?
Beside an armchair, 58 to 64 inches puts the bottom of the shade just below eye level when seated, which is where you want it for reading. Arc and ambient lamps run taller at 65 to 72 inches and are meant to throw light across the room rather than onto a page.
Where to place it
Put the lamp at the outer arm of a sofa rather than behind it, so the light falls forward into the room. In a corner, angle the shade back towards the seating instead of into the wall.
Base weight
A cast brass or heavy iron base will not shift when someone walks past. A tripod spreads the load and suits an uneven floor. Tell us if the lamp is going somewhere with children or a dog and we will specify the heavier base.
