Window Grill Design: 2026 Ideas, Styles & Costs (India)

A good window grill design has to earn its place twice: it has to keep the home secure, and it has to look like part of the elevation rather than a cage bolted over the glass. The best modern window grills do both — a clean pattern in the right metal and finish that reads as architecture from inside and out. This guide covers the window grill designs defining 2026, how to choose one in five steps, the metals and finishes to specify, safety, and how to get a grill made to measure for your openings.

How to choose a window grill design (5 steps)

  1. Fix the job first. Decide whether the grill is primarily security, child safety, privacy, or decoration — it sets the spacing and pattern.
  2. Match the elevation. A minimal home wants slim bars or a clean geometric jali; a traditional facade suits scrollwork.
  3. Choose the metal and finish (below) for your exposure — a fully weather-exposed window needs more than an interior one.
  4. Confirm safety spacing. Keep gaps tight enough that a small child cannot pass through, and consider an openable section for ventilation and escape.
  5. Get it made to measure. Share the exact opening sizes so every grill fits its window rather than being trimmed from a stock size.

Window & balcony grill design styles for 2026

Five directions cover most homes this year:

  • Minimal vertical / horizontal bars — slim MS bars in matte black or charcoal; the most popular modern window grill design, quiet and secure.
  • Geometric jali grills — CNC or laser-cut lattices that give privacy and a facade signature in one panel.
  • Contemporary linear & fluted — offset slats and gradient bar spacing for an architectural, screen-like look.
  • Openable / MS-frame safety grills — a hinged or sliding section for ventilation, cleaning and emergency escape, popular for children's rooms and kitchens.
  • Wrought-iron scrollwork — the classic ornamental grill for heritage and traditional homes.

Choosing the metal: MS, wrought iron, stainless & brass

The metal sets the cost, the look and the maintenance:

  • Mild steel (MS) — the value workhorse for window grills; powder-coated in any colour, strong and economical, needs a good coat to resist monsoon rust.
  • Wrought iron — for scrollwork and ornamental grills; hand-formed and characterful, repainted periodically.
  • Stainless steel — corrosion-resistant and low-maintenance for exposed and coastal windows, in brushed or PVD finishes.
  • Brass — the premium, warm choice for feature windows and interiors where the grill is seen up close.

Window grills vs balcony grills

They share a language but not a brief. A window grill is a fixed or openable panel sized to the opening, weighted toward security and ventilation; a balcony grill is a taller barrier that must also meet safe railing heights. The advantage of file-based cutting is that one motif can run across both — and across the gate and staircase — so the whole property reads as one design. For the balcony side, see our guide to balcony railing & grill design.

Finishes, safety & maintenance

Powder coating is the standard finish for window grills — a tough, even colour in any RAL shade; PU paint offers deeper gloss control, and brass is lacquered or left to patina. On safety, keep bar spacing tight enough that a small child cannot pass through, de-burr every edge, and include at least one openable or break-out section per room for ventilation and emergency escape. Maintenance is simple: an occasional wipe, and a repaint every few years for MS and iron in exposed positions.

Getting a bespoke window grill made

Because every window is a slightly different size, grills are made to measure: the design is drawn to your exact openings, cut and welded, finished in-house, and installed. Frequently asked questions

What is the best material for a window grill in India?

Powder-coated mild steel is the most popular for value, strength and rust resistance once coated; stainless steel suits exposed or coastal windows; wrought iron is best for ornamental scrollwork; and brass is the premium choice for feature windows seen up close. The right pick depends on exposure, budget and the look you want.

What affects the cost of a window grill design?

Cost is driven by the metal and its thickness, the total cut or bar length (intricate patterns take longer), the opening size, the finish (a hand patina or PU paint costs more than standard powder coat), and installation. For an accurate figure, share your opening sizes and pattern with our workshop.

Should a window grill be fixed or openable?

At least one openable or break-out section per room is strongly recommended — for ventilation, cleaning the glass, and emergency escape. The rest of the grill can be fixed for security. Kitchens and children's rooms especially benefit from an openable section.

Are window grills made to order?

Yes. Because every window is a different size, grills are drawn to your exact openings, cut, welded and finished, then installed — so the fit is exact and the same design can carry across windows, balcony, gate and staircase.

Can I order custom metalwork from outside India?

Yes. Delhi Brass works with designers and homeowners around the world and ships worldwide, with regular exports to the USA, UK, EU and UAE. Share your drawings, dimensions, finish and delivery address so we can confirm the specification, packing and freight for your project. Read our international shipping and specification FAQs.

What is a ladder window grill design?

A ladder grill uses repeated horizontal members between uprights. It gives a simple linear elevation, but the spacing, anchorage and any emergency-opening requirement matter more than the motif. Review the drawing against the actual window and local building requirements.
