Each Patra sconce is a single sheet of brass rolled loosely into a column, like a page lifted from an old manuscript and left half-open on the wall. Patra means a leaf, or a written page, and the name fits: the edges are framed with a fine chevron border and a band of scalloped leaves, and small flowering bushes and grass sprigs are scattered sparsely across the face.

Light escapes only from the open top and bottom, washing the wall above and below while the brass itself stays dark and sculptural. The two sconces are made as mirror images, one wrapping left and one wrapping right, so the pair sits symmetrically on either side of whatever it frames.

Made by hand

Each sconce begins as a flat sheet of brass. The motifs are raised by repoussé, with the metal hammered from the reverse so the pattern lifts from the surface, and the borders and outlines are then worked by hand-hammering. The sheet is rolled into shape and given a brushed antique finish, with a darker patina left in the detailing to bring it forward. Every strike is made by hand, so no two pieces are exactly alike, and you will see a gentle, hammered movement in the metal.

Placing the pair

Hang Patra on either side of a mirror, artwork or headboard, with the curled outer layer of each sconce facing inward. As a guide, mount the centres at around eye level, about 160 to 170 cm from the floor, and leave 20 to 30 cm between each sconce and the edge of the piece it frames.

Care

Switch off at the mains before cleaning. Dust gently with a soft, dry cloth. Avoid water, metal polish, abrasives and chemical cleaners, which will strip the antique finish.

Patra is made to order and sold as a pair. Bulbs are included, and the sconces come with a 2-year warranty. Production takes 10–14 days, followed by 4–6 days for delivery.
