Shuka Double Wall Light

A brass parrot among leaves and flowers, holding two soft pools of light.

Bulbs not included | 2-year warranty

Shuka is Sanskrit for parrot, a bird that appears again and again in Indian poetry and miniature painting, often as a messenger between lovers. Here it perches on a tall fluted column, its long tail falling over the side, while slender branches curve out around it, set with small veined leaves and two open flowers. The branches end in two candle arms, each topped with a pleated ivory fabric shade.

The design is deliberately unbalanced, the way a growing branch would be: the right arm climbs higher than the left, and the left sweeps down into a loop before it rises. Every part is cast in brass and finished in antique brass, with the recesses darkened so the feathers, leaf veins and petals stand out.

What makes Shuka distinctive

• Cast in brass: The parrot, column, leaves and flowers are cast, so the detail is crisp and the piece has real weight.
• A natural, asymmetric form: Two arms at different heights give the light the movement of a living branch rather than a formal candelabra.
• Soft, shaded light: Two pleated ivory fabric shades diffuse the bulbs and wash the wall above and below with warm light.
• Made to order in India: From Delhi Brass, a fourth-generation lighting and decorative metalwork company.

Finding the right spot

At 33 inches tall, Shuka is a statement piece. It suits the wall above a console, a sideboard or a mantel, or a foyer wall where it can be seen on arrival. As a guide, hang it so the shades sit at about 165 to 180 cm from the floor, and leave at least 25 cm between the bottom finial and the top of any furniture below. For the softest glow, use E14 candle LED bulbs in warm white (2700K to 3000K).

Care

Switch off at the mains before cleaning. Dust the brass with a soft, dry brush or cloth, working gently around the leaves and feathers. Remove dust from the fabric shades with a soft brush. Avoid metal polish, abrasives and chemical cleaners, which will strip the antique finish.
