In Indian poetry and miniature painting the parrot is the messenger of lovers and the mount of Kamadeva, the god of love; in Rajput and Mughal paintings it perches on a lady's hand, ready to carry a secret across the garden. Centuries later, brass birds perched on lamp columns became a favourite of the glamorous Hollywood Regency interiors of the 1960s and 70s. This lamp brings the two together.

The parrot is cast in brass, with every feather on its head, breast and folded wings sharply defined, its claw gripping a short branch and its long tail falling beside the column. Below, the slim column rises from a domed brass foot cast with a border of flowers and vines and a fluted collar, set on a disc of white marble that keeps the tall lamp steady. Above, a finely knife-pleated charcoal-black shade sends the light downward, over the parrot, so the brass glows warm while the shade stays dark and quiet.

Finding the right spot

The lamp is tall and slender, so it suits a console in an entrance hall or behind a sofa, a sideboard in the dining room, or a side table beside a deep armchair. Its 9-inch base takes up very little room, and a pair at either end of a console or sideboard looks especially good. For a warm glow, use a warm white (2700K) LED bulb.

Care

Switch off and let the bulb cool before cleaning. Dust the brass with a soft, dry cloth, using a soft brush to reach into the feathers and flowers. Wipe the marble with a barely damp cloth and dry it; keep acidic cleaners off the stone. Freshen the pleated shade with a soft brush. Avoid metal polish, abrasives and chemical cleaners, which will strip the antique finish.
