The double gourd is one of the oldest vessel shapes in the world, from Chinese porcelain to Indian surahis, and lamp makers have used it for a century because its stacked curves look good from every side. In the 1970s, designers gave it a new edge by silvering ribbed glass so that it shone like polished metal, catching every light in the room along its ribs.

This lamp follows that look. Its body is made of glass, moulded into two stacked gourds with deep vertical ribs, then finished in mirror chrome, so it reads as bright silver while staying lighter than solid metal. It stands on a stone base, which keeps the lamp steady and adds a quiet natural contrast, and a cream pleated empire shade softens the light.

Finding the right spot

At 30 inches tall, it suits a side table beside a sofa, a console or a pair of bedside tables. The chrome reflects whatever is around it, so it looks best with a little space and simple objects beside it. On a side table of about 24 inches, the bottom of the shade sits near eye level for someone seated. Use a warm white (2700K) bulb.

Care

Switch off and let the bulb cool before cleaning. Wipe the chrome with a soft, dry microfibre cloth to remove fingerprints. Dust the stone base with a dry cloth, and freshen the pleated shade with a soft brush. Avoid abrasives and chemical cleaners, which can scratch the chrome finish. Handle the glass body with care.
