In the Paris of the 1770s and 1780s, the bronze makers of Louis XVI's court borrowed their ornament from the upholsterer. The silk cords, knots and tassels that tied back curtains and hung from bell-pulls, the craft the French call passementerie, were cast in gilt bronze and turned into wall lights: a cord looped from a ring, knotted through a rosette, its ends twisted into candle arms and finished with a falling tassel. The conceit, a heavy metal light that seems to hang from a silk rope, has delighted decorators ever since.

The Cordon is made in that spirit. A looped cord rises at the top, drops through a knot over a round rosette medallion, and divides into two twisted-rope arms. Each arm ends in a drip pan and a candle sleeve under a pleated white fabric shade, and below the rosette the cord falls to a full tassel. It is made in brass and finished in a dark bronze, so the twist of the rope and the threads of the tassel read clearly against a pale or panelled wall.

Finding the right spot

The Cordon is made to be used in pairs: either side of a painting, a mirror, a fireplace or a bed, or along a panelled wall, as at The Governor House. Mount it with the shades about 60 to 66 inches above the floor, or about 30 inches above a sideboard or console. It suits white panelling as well as dark wood. It takes G9 capsule bulbs; use warm white (2700K) LED G9 bulbs.

Care

Switch off and let the bulbs cool before cleaning. Dust the rope and tassel with a soft, dry brush to reach into the twist. Freshen the pleated shades with a soft brush. Avoid metal polish, abrasives and chemical cleaners, which will strip the bronze finish.

This wall light is made to order and priced per piece. It takes two G9 bulbs, which are not included, and comes with a 2-year warranty. Production takes 10–14 days, followed by 4–6 days for delivery.
