Small crystal-hung pendants and lanterns were made for the hallways, landings and boudoirs of grand French and English houses in the 18th and 19th centuries, where a full chandelier would have been too large. Their cast-brass frames followed the curling acanthus scrolls of the Rococo, and coloured glass gave the light a warm, candle-like tone.

This pendant brings those elements together at a small scale. Scrolling arms of cast brass in an antique finish curve out and down from a decorative ceiling cup to form an open cage. Inside sits a globe of amber-tinted glass, hand-cut in a diamond lattice, on a brass collar and turned stem. Clear crystal drops hang from the tip of every arm and below the globe, so when it is lit the amber glow is scattered into sparkle.

Finding the right spot

At 15 inches across, it suits a small entrance foyer, a hallway, a stair landing, a powder room or a bedroom, either centred or as a pair either side of a bed. In a walkway, hang it so the bottom is at least 7 feet above the floor; over a bedside table, about 20 to 24 inches above the top. Use a warm white (2700K) bulb.

Care

Switch off and let the bulb cool before cleaning. Dust the brass with a soft, dry brush. Clean the glass and crystals with a barely damp cloth, then dry them at once. The antique finish is meant to deepen with time, so do not polish it back. Avoid abrasive pads and chemical cleaners.

This pendant is made to order, and the chain length can be set to your ceiling. It takes one E27 bulb, which is not included, and comes with a 2-year warranty. Production takes 10–14 days, followed by 4–6 days for delivery.
