Description

A Russian Empire-style chandelier: a cobalt-blue body mounted in cast brass, hung on leaf chains, with ten acanthus arms and tall candle sleeves.

Bulbs not included | 2-year warranty

In St Petersburg in the early 1800s, the palaces of Alexander I were lit by a new kind of chandelier. Russian makers took the gilt-bronze ornament of French Empire design and set it against a deep cobalt blue, in glass or painted metal, so the gold seemed to glow against the colour. These blue-and-gilt chandeliers became a signature of the Russian imperial style, and the finest survive in the palaces along the Neva and at Pavlovsk.

The Neva is made in that spirit. A deep cobalt-blue painted cone forms the body, mounted with long cast brass acanthus leaves and crowned by a wide brass gallery of anthemion and palmette ornament. Chains of cast brass leaves hang from a small corona to hold it. Ten S-scroll arms dressed in acanthus, with small brass pinecones hanging from them, rise at two heights to leafy cups, drip pans and tall brass candle sleeves. The brass has a satin antique finish, darker in the recesses of the casting.

What makes the Neva distinctive

  • Cobalt and brass: A deep blue painted body set against cast brass mounts, in the Russian imperial manner.
  • Leaf-link chains: The body hangs from chains of cast brass leaves beneath a small corona.
  • Ten candle arms: Acanthus-dressed arms at two heights, with tall brass candle sleeves and hanging pinecones.
  • Made to order in India: From Delhi Brass, a fourth-generation lighting and decorative metalwork company.

Finding the right spot

At 43 inches across, the Neva suits a dining table of 84 to 108 inches, or the centre of a drawing room, library or entrance hall of about 16 by 16 feet or more. Its cobalt body works especially well with blue-and-white porcelain, mahogany and ivory or cream walls. Over a table, hang it so its lowest point sits 30 to 34 inches above the table top. Elsewhere, keep at least 7 feet of clearance below it. Use clear warm white (2700K) E14 filament candle bulbs on a dimmer.

Care

Switch off and let the bulbs cool before cleaning. Dust the brass with a soft, dry brush to reach into the leaves. Wipe the blue body with a soft, dry cloth only. Avoid water, metal polish, abrasives and chemical cleaners, which will damage the antique and painted finishes.

Before you order

This chandelier is made to order. It takes ten E14 bulbs, which are not included, and comes with a 2-year warranty. It is delivered with its chain and canopy. Production takes 10–14 days, followed by 4–6 days for delivery.
