In Granada, the craftsmen of the Alhambra turned stone, plaster and metal into lace. Their pierced brass lamps threw patterns of light across tiled walls, and when Spain's Baroque metalworkers later made candle chandeliers for its churches and palaces, they kept that Andalusian love of openwork. The result was a uniquely Spanish chandelier: solid and weighty in its casting, yet light and intricate wherever you look.

The Granada is cast in brass in that tradition. An engraved baluster column with a small crown of crystal-hung scrolls carries two tiers of arms, eight below and four above. Each arm is a heavy S-scroll pierced right through with lace-like Moorish scrollwork, so light passes through the metal itself. Every arm ends in a round drip pan hung with faceted crystal pendeloques and a tall brass candle sleeve. The antique finish is dark and deep in the openwork, with warm gold on the raised scrolls.

Finding the right spot

At 32 inches across, the Granada suits a dining table of 60 to 84 inches, a study or library, or an entrance hall or drawing room of about 13 by 13 feet or more. Over a table, hang it so the lowest crystal sits 30 to 34 inches above the table top. Elsewhere, keep at least 7 feet of clearance below it. Use clear warm white (2700K) E14 filament candle bulbs on a dimmer.

Care

Switch off and let the bulbs cool before cleaning. Dust the brass with a soft, dry brush to reach into the pierced openwork. Wipe the crystals with a barely damp lint-free cloth and dry them at once. Avoid metal polish, abrasives and chemical cleaners, which will strip the antique finish.

This chandelier is made to order. It takes twelve E14 bulbs, which are not included, and comes with a 2-year warranty. It is delivered with its chain and canopy, and the crystals are fitted on site. Production takes 10–14 days, followed by 4–6 days for delivery.
