Reed is made from one long strip of brass, 36 inches tall and just 5 inches wide, bent into a shallow curve along its length, the way a reed or a length of split bamboo curves. Its ends are softly rounded and trimmed at a gentle slant. Three small globes of frosted glass sit along the upper part of the strip, and the lowest part is left plain, which gives the light its tall, unhurried proportions.

The design rests on one idea: the brass is both the structure and the reflector. The curve stiffens the thin sheet so it stays perfectly straight, and it also turns the brass into a mirror for the bulbs. Light from each globe slides across the curve in soft bands of gold, so the whole strip glows, not just the glass. The three globes are identical and evenly spaced on a single vertical line, each held on a short brass cup, and the strip floats a little off the wall on a slim brass backbar, so from the side it reads as a thin, curved blade.

The philosophy comes from mid-century modern design: make a light from as few parts as possible, and let the material speak. One material, one gesture, one repeated element. The antique finish, brushed along the length of the sheet, keeps the brass warm and soft rather than shiny, and the frosted globes give an even, glare-free glow.

Finding the right spot

Its tall, narrow shape suits places where wall space is limited: beside a mirror in a powder room or dressing area, on either side of a bed in place of table lamps, flanking a doorway, or along a narrow hallway, where its slim depth keeps it out of the way. Hang it vertically with its centre at about eye height, 160 to 165 cm from the floor. Beside a mirror, a pair, one on each side, gives the most even light on the face; mount them 10 to 20 cm from the mirror's edges. In a bathroom, keep it outside the shower and bath zones. For a warm glow, use compact warm white (2700K) E14 LED bulbs.

Care

Switch off at the mains and let the bulbs cool before cleaning. Dust the brass with a soft, dry cloth, wiping along the brushed grain, and wipe the glass globes with a barely damp cloth. Avoid metal polish, abrasives and chemical cleaners, which will strip the antique finish.

Reed is made to order and priced per light. It takes three E14 bulbs, which are not included, and comes with a 2-year warranty. Production takes 10–14 days, followed by 4–6 days for delivery.
