We named it Flambeau, the French word for a torch. The torch is one of the oldest motifs in classical lighting: the Regency and Directoire wall lights of the early nineteenth century were made as torches held aloft, and a candelabrum was simply several of them gathered together. Flambeau keeps that idea and strips away the ornament, leaving only the lines.

The design is a small system of repeated parts. Five identical torch uprights, each a slim rod with a thicker sleeve, plain turned collars, a candle cup at the top and a little ball finial at the bottom, are set at graduated lengths: longest at the centre, shortest at the edges, so the shades rise and fall like a bouquet. A single crossbar with round knob ends ties them together, and a narrow backplate holds the composition off the wall, with the torches staggered in depth so the light reads in the round from every angle.

The philosophy is restraint. Matt black steel on a pale wall reads like a pen drawing: clear, graphic and calm. Five small off-white fabric bell shades, each edged with a fine dark trim, soften that line and break the light into five warm, gentle pools, closer to candlelight than to a single bright source. It belongs as easily in a classical hall as in a pared-back modern home.

Finding the right spot

Flambeau is a generous light with real presence, so give it a wall of its own: above a console in an entrance hall, centred over a sideboard in a dining room, on a stair landing, or as a pair flanking a fireplace or a large mirror. Because it projects 16 inches from the wall, keep it out of narrow passages where people walk close to the wall. Mount it with its centre at about 165 to 170 cm from the floor, or with the lowest finial about 50 to 60 cm above a console. For a warm, candle-like glow, use compact warm white (2700K) E27 LED bulbs.

Care

Switch off at the mains and let the bulbs cool before cleaning. Dust the steel with a soft, dry cloth, and if needed wipe with a barely damp cloth and dry it straight away. Freshen the shades with a soft brush or a lint roller; do not wet the fabric. Avoid abrasives and chemical cleaners, which can mark the matt finish.
