Wire birdcages and garden aviaries have inspired designers for centuries, from Victorian conservatories to mid-century modern furniture, where thin metal rods were used to draw shapes in the air rather than fill them. A cage lets light and space pass straight through, so even a tall piece feels light in a room.

This floor lamp takes that idea and stretches it upward. Many slender rods of mild steel rise from a round ring at the floor, draw in at a narrow waist, then flare outward to hold a drum shade of natural linen at the top. The steel is painted a soft bluish-grey, which sits well with both warm woods and cool stone, and the linen shade gives a gentle, diffused light.

Finding the right spot

At 70 inches tall, it suits the end of a sofa, the corner of a living room, beside an armchair or in a bedroom or study. Its open frame works well in front of a window or against a plain wall, where the outline of the rods can be seen. It pairs well with natural woods, linen, rattan and cool stone. Use a warm white (2700K) bulb.

Care

Switch off and let the bulb cool before cleaning. Dust the rods with a soft, dry cloth or a soft brush, and freshen the linen shade with a soft brush. Avoid abrasive pads and chemical cleaners, which can damage the paint.

Before you order

This floor lamp is made to order, and the colour can be adapted. It takes one E27 bulb, which is not included, and comes with a 2-year warranty. Production takes 10–14 days, followed by 4–6 days for delivery.
