The bouillotte lamp takes its name from an 18th-century French card game. Players gathered around a small table lit by a brass candelabra with a shade placed low over the candles, so the light fell on the cards rather than in the players' eyes. The form, with its slim column, candle arms and conical shade topped by a brass gallery, became one of the classic table lamps of French and later English interiors.

This version is made in cast brass with an antique finish. The fluted stem rises from a gadrooned round foot, narrowing toward the bottom and swelling through turned knops to a cluster of three candle cups. Above them sits a black fabric shade lined in gold, so the light glows warm on the inside, and a pierced brass jaali gallery with a ribbed finial finishes the top.

Finding the right spot

At 30 inches tall with a 15-inch shade, it suits a writing desk, a library table, a console, or a pair of side tables flanking a sofa. The black shade sends the light down onto the table, which makes it a good reading and desk lamp. Use warm white (2700K) candle bulbs.

Care

Switch off and let the bulbs cool before cleaning. Dust the brass with a soft, dry cloth. The antique finish is meant to deepen with time, so do not polish it back. Brush the shade gently with a soft brush. Avoid abrasive pads and chemical cleaners, which will strip the finish.

This table lamp is made to order. It takes three E14 candle bulbs, which are not included, and comes with a 2-year warranty. Production takes 10–14 days, followed by 4–6 days for delivery.
