The hall lantern is one of the oldest forms in European lighting. In eighteenth-century France a glazed lantern like this hung in the vestibule or over the staircase, sheltered from draughts, lighting the way into the house. Ours follows the Louis XVI pattern: a cylinder of curved clear glass held between two ornamented rings, slim uprights capped with cast leaves, and a crown of C-scroll arms gathering to a turned finial and chain.

It is cast in aluminium and finished in gold leaf, then aged to a dull antique gold: muted and soft, darker in the beaded and pierced borders, with only a gentle sheen on the raised ornament, so it looks like a lantern that has hung in the same hall for generations. Aluminium keeps a lantern of this size light, so it is easier to hang. Inside, an inner band of cast ornament circles the glass, and four candle lights on a slim central stem glow through the cylinder like candle flames.

Finding the right spot

Hang it in an entrance hall or vestibule, over a stair landing, along a corridor in a series, or above a round centre table. Where people walk beneath it, keep the bottom of the lantern at least 210 cm above the floor; over a table, hang it 75 to 90 cm above the top. Tell us your ceiling height and we will set the chain length to suit. For a candle-like glow, use warm white (2700K) E14 candle-shaped LED bulbs.

Care

Switch off at the mains and let the bulbs cool before cleaning. Gold leaf is delicate: dust it lightly with a soft, dry brush and never rub, wet or polish it. Clean the glass with glass cleaner sprayed onto a cloth, never directly onto the lantern. Avoid abrasives and chemical cleaners.

This lantern is made to order and priced per piece. It takes four E14 bulbs, which are not included, and comes with a 2-year warranty. Production takes 10–14 days, followed by 4–6 days for delivery.
