In eighteenth-century France, the lanterne d'applique was the wall lantern of the entrance hall and the stair: a glazed cage fixed to the wall beside a door, so a candle could burn in a draughty passage without guttering. Later, the workshops of Florence made the same form in gilded tole, cutting and hammering sheet metal into leaves and scrolls that curled around the glass. Both traditions lie behind this lantern.

The Lanterne sets panels of clear glass in a frame of curling leaf scrolls, with a crest above and a finial below. Inside, two candle lights stand side by side, so the lantern glows like a pair of flames behind glass. The frame is mild steel, hand-finished in an antique gold paint that is darker in the curls of the leaves.

Finding the right spot

Use a pair either side of a front door, an entrance hall mirror or an archway, or a row along a corridor or stair. It also suits a covered verandah or porch that is protected from direct rain. Mount it with the centre of the glass about 66 to 72 inches above the floor. Use clear warm white (2700K) E14 candle bulbs.

Care

Switch off and let the bulbs cool before cleaning. Dust the leaves with a soft, dry brush. Clean the glass with a barely damp cloth, then dry it at once. Keep water off the painted metal, and avoid polish, abrasives and chemical cleaners, which will damage the antique gold finish.

This wall lantern is made to order. It takes two E14 bulbs, which are not included, and comes with a 2-year warranty. Production takes 10–14 days, followed by 4–6 days for delivery.
