In the 1760s the Scottish architect Robert Adam brought a new, lighter classicism to English houses, borrowing ornaments from the ruins of Rome: round sunburst medallions called paterae, fan-shaped palmettes, ribbon bows with hanging swags, and urn finials. A century and a half later, those same motifs dressed the great bowl lights of Edwardian and colonial interiors, where a wide basin of metal openwork hid the bulbs and threw a soft, even light up onto the ceiling and down into the room.

This chandelier is cast in brass in that spirit. Large sunburst medallions with beaded rims alternate with fan palmettes and small rosettes around the bowl, tied together by ribbon bows and swags, while tall ribs sweep down to a fluted stem and a tassel finial. Urn and scroll finials crown the rim, and three chains rise to a single ring. Inside, a lining of pleated ivory fabric fills the bowl, so by day the brass reads as lace over soft cream, and at night eight hidden bulbs make the whole bowl glow, with the openwork in silhouette.

Finding the right spot

Hang it in a formal living room, over a round or square dining table, or in an entrance hall, with a ceiling of 10 feet or more. Over a table, keep the bottom of the bowl 30 to 36 inches above the tabletop; in a walkway, about 7 feet above the floor. Because the light is diffused by the fabric, it also works well in a bedroom or library where bare bulbs would glare. Use warm white (2700K) E14 LED bulbs, and add a dimmer.

Care

Switch off and let the bulbs cool before cleaning. Dust the brass with a soft, dry brush to reach into the openwork. Freshen the fabric lining with a soft brush or a vacuum on low with a brush attachment. Avoid metal polish, abrasives and chemical cleaners, which will strip the antique finish.

This chandelier is made to order and priced per piece. It takes eight E14 bulbs, which are not included, and comes with a 2-year warranty. Production takes 10–14 days, followed by 4–6 days for delivery.
