In eighteenth-century France the hunt was the great pastime of the court, and its emblems found their way into everything from tapestries to door handles. In the reign of Louis XVI, Parisian bronze makers made a famous model of wall light, the applique aux cors de chasse, whose candle arms were shaped as coiled French hunting horns. They hung them from a neoclassical trophy: a ribbon bow, a sheaf of oak leaves and acorns around an oval medallion, and tasselled cords falling below.

The Chasse is cast in brass after that model. A ribbon bow tops a reeded staff, which leads down to an oak-leaf trophy with a beaded oval medallion and three hanging tassels. From the centre, two arms coil round as hunting horns, each bell flaring out into a leafy acanthus mouth, and rise to tall tapered candle sleeves with ring mouldings. Two ivory linen shades, finely pleated, soften the light. The antique finish settles darker into the leaves and folds of the casting.

Finding the right spot

The Chasse belongs in a library, study or drawing room, and looks best in pairs: either side of a fireplace or a painting, between bookcases, or flanking a bed. Mount it with its centre about 60 to 66 inches above the floor, or level with the middle of the painting or mirror it frames. Use warm white (2700K) E14 candle LED bulbs for a soft glow through the linen.

Care

Switch off and let the bulbs cool before cleaning. Dust the brass with a soft, dry brush to reach into the leaves and tassels. Freshen the linen shades with a soft brush. Avoid metal polish, abrasives and chemical cleaners, which will strip the antique finish.
