Feuillage is French for foliage, and in the reign of Louis XV it was the bronze maker's favourite subject. Rococo wall lights of the 1740s and 50s, the bras de lumière that lit the salons of Paris, abandoned straight lines altogether: their arms grew as twisting acanthus stems, their candle cups opened like flowers, and their backplates were crowned with the scallop shell, or rocaille, that gave the style its name.

The Feuillage is cast in brass after that tradition. An upright oval backplate with a beaded border and a domed centre is topped with a fan-shaped shell over two small scrolls, with a smaller shell pendant below. From its centre, two arms spring out as deeply cut acanthus leaves that curl down and back up again. Each ends in a leafy cup with a five-petal flower, a wide frilled bobeche and a tall plain candle sleeve, left bare so the candle bulb is part of the look. The antique finish settles darker into every leaf and petal.

Finding the right spot

The Feuillage looks best in pairs: either side of a mirror above a console in an entrance hall, flanking a fireplace or a painting, or along a dining room wall. Mount it with its centre about 60 to 66 inches above the floor, or level with the middle of the mirror or painting it frames. As the bulbs are on show, choose clear warm white (2700K) E14 filament candle bulbs, dimmable if you can, for a candlelit glow.

Care

Switch off and let the bulbs cool before cleaning. Dust the brass with a soft, dry brush to reach into the leaves and petals. Avoid metal polish, abrasives and chemical cleaners, which will strip the antique finish.

This wall light is made to order and priced per piece. It takes two E14 bulbs, which are not included, and comes with a 2-year warranty. Production takes 10–14 days, followed by 4–6 days for delivery.
