Before electricity, great rooms were lit by standing candelabra, their candles protected from draughts by tall glass hurricane shades and surrounded by cut crystal that multiplied the flame. Many of the finest examples were made for European palaces and, later, for the drawing rooms and durbar halls of India.

This floor lamp brings that idea up to date. Four scrolled brass arms surround a raised central light, so there are five lights in all. Each sits in a clear cut-glass dish hung with crystal drops, under its own clear hurricane glass, with a candle-style E14 bulb inside. Chains of crystal beads swag between the arms, and the whole crown is carried on a long fluted brass stem with a round foot.

Finding the right spot

At 65 inches tall and 18 inches across, it suits the corner of a formal living room, a spot beside a sofa or chaise, a foyer, or a large bedroom. Give it some open space so the crystal can catch the light. It pairs well with a crystal chandelier in the same room. Use warm white (2700K) candle or filament bulbs.

Care

Switch off and let the bulbs cool before cleaning. Dust the brass with a soft, dry cloth. Clean the glass shades and crystals with a barely damp cloth, then dry them at once. The antique finish is meant to deepen with time, so do not polish it back. Avoid abrasive pads and chemical cleaners.
