Darpan means mirror. A tall wooden panel, painted glossy black, is set with a slender mirror in a moulded frame painted antique gold; at the top, the frame steps inward through soft S-curved shoulders into a narrow arch. In front of it stands a single lamp on a slim stem of black-painted steel, ringed at intervals and finished with a turned finial, rising to a polished brass top and a black fabric shade lined in gold.

Switched on, the gold lining throws warm light up and down the wall and the mirror doubles it, so a corridor or landing reads brighter and deeper. Switched off, it holds the wall like a piece of furniture.

Finding the right spot

Darpan is made for long walls: a corridor, a gallery, a landing or either side of a doorway. Mount it with its centre at about 160 cm from the floor. Along a corridor, repeat it every 2 to 2.5 metres for an even rhythm of light. Because it projects 13 inches from the wall, it suits corridors at least 1.2 metres wide. For a warm glow through the gold lining, use a warm white (2700K) E14 LED bulb.

Care

Switch off at the mains before cleaning. Dust the frame, stem and brass with a soft, dry cloth. Clean the mirror with glass cleaner sprayed onto a cloth, never directly onto the glass, so it does not seep behind the frame. Freshen the shade with a soft brush. Avoid metal polish, abrasives and chemical cleaners.

Darpan is made to order and priced per piece. It takes one E14 bulb, which is not included, and comes with a 2-year warranty. Production takes 10–14 days. Delivery within India typically takes a further 4–6 days; international transit is quoted for the destination.
