After the excesses of Rococo, French design in the 1790s turned to a cooler, more architectural classicism. The Directoire style, named after the government of the day, borrowed directly from the buildings of ancient Greece and Rome: straight lines, crossed lattices, dentilled cornices and flame-topped urns. It sat between the ornament of the old court and the grandeur of the Empire that followed, and its quiet, ordered look has stayed in classical interiors ever since.

This wall light is drawn from that vocabulary. Its tall backplate is a slim brass frame like a pilaster, crossed by an X and centred with a small rosette. It is capped by a cornice with a dentil band and a little flame urn, and closed at the base by a stepped plinth and an acorn drop. From a round boss, two S-scroll arms curl out to drip pans and plain brass candle sleeves, each under a tapered ivory linen shade edged with a fine tan band. The brass is finished in a warm, satin antique gold.

Finding the right spot

It looks best in pairs: either side of a mirror above a console, flanking a fireplace or a bed, or along a hallway. Mount it with its centre about 60 to 66 inches above the floor, or level with the middle of the mirror it frames, a few inches out from each side. Use warm white (2700K) E14 candle LED bulbs for a soft glow through the linen.

Care

Switch off and let the bulbs cool before cleaning. Dust the brass with a soft, dry cloth. Freshen the linen shades with a soft brush. Avoid metal polish, abrasives and chemical cleaners, which will strip the antique finish.

This wall light is made to order and priced per piece. It takes two E14 bulbs, which are not included, and comes with a 2-year warranty. Production takes 10–14 days, followed by 4–6 days for delivery.
