In the country houses of eighteenth-century Provence, the gilt and bronze of Paris was too grand and too costly, so local craftsmen carved their candle sconces in wood and painted them in soft whites and greys. Over the years the paint wore back at the edges to show the wood beneath, and that gentle, timeworn look became the signature of French Provincial style.

This sconce takes that look. A backplate of S-scrolls in carved wood, painted white and distressed to show warm brown at the edges, carries two candle arms. Clear crystal teardrops hang below, catching the light from the bare candle bulbs.

Finding the right spot

Use a pair either side of a bed, a dressing table or a mirror, or beside a fireplace in a farmhouse, cottage or French-style room. Mount it with the candle tips about 60 to 66 inches above the floor, or about 30 inches above a bedside table. Use clear warm white (2700K) E14 candle bulbs. For indoor use.

Care

Switch off and let the bulbs cool before cleaning. Dust the wood with a soft, dry brush. Wipe the crystal drops with a barely damp cloth and dry them at once. Keep water off the painted wood, and avoid chemical cleaners.

Before you order

This wall light is made to order. Because each piece is distressed by hand, no two are exactly alike. It takes two E14 bulbs, which are not included, and comes with a 2-year warranty. Production takes 10–14 days, followed by 4–6 days for delivery.
