In the nineteenth century, the durbar halls of India's palaces were lit by some of the finest chandeliers ever made. Royal courts ordered great brass and cut-glass pieces from the glassworks of England and Bohemia: tiers of curving arms, glass dishes under every candle, globes cut all over in fine diamonds, and long spear-shaped prisms that turned candlelight into sparkle across a whole room. Many still hang in the palaces of Rajasthan, Hyderabad and Gwalior today.

The Durbar is made in that tradition. Below a small crown of curled arms hung with crystal drops, an upper tier of seven S-scroll brass arms carries candles on scalloped cut-glass dishes, each hung with long spear prisms. At its heart sits a large crystal globe cut all over in a fine diamond pattern, above a brass band with a pierced lattice and a deep diamond-cut glass bowl. A lower tier of fourteen sweeping C-scroll arms carries more candles, glass dishes and prisms, and a small cut-crystal ball finishes the piece below. The brass is finished in a warm, satin antique gold.

Finding the right spot

The Durbar is made for a double-height entrance hall, a stairwell, a ballroom or a large formal drawing room, with a ceiling of at least 14 feet. Hang it centred in the space, over a round centre table or a seating group, with the bottom at least 8 feet above the floor; in a double-height hall, bring it down on a longer chain to sit in the middle of the volume. The chain is cut to your ceiling, so tell us the drop you need. Use warm white (2700K) E14 candle LED bulbs, and add a dimmer.

Care

Switch off and let the bulbs cool before cleaning. Dust the brass with a soft, dry cloth. Clean the crystals and glass dishes one by one with a lint-free cloth and a little glass cleaner sprayed onto the cloth, never directly onto the chandelier, wearing cotton gloves to avoid fingerprints. Avoid metal polish and abrasives on the brass, which will strip the antique finish.

The Durbar is made to order and priced per piece. It takes 21 E14 bulbs, which are not included, and comes with a 2-year warranty. Production takes 10–14 days, followed by 4–6 days for delivery. A chandelier of this size is delivered in parts and assembled on site.
