In the great houses of eighteenth-century France and Italy, the finest chandeliers were cast in bronze and modelled entirely in foliage: arms that curl like acanthus leaves, cups that open like buds, and a central stem that seems to grow rather than be built. When electricity arrived in the nineteenth century, these Baroque and Rococo forms were given small fabric shades over each candle, which softened the light and made them at home in drawing and dining rooms rather than only in ballrooms.

The Baroque Foliage follows that tradition. A central column of deeply cast acanthus scrolls carries two tiers of arms, eight below and four above, each one a heavy curl of leaves ending in a leafy cup and a carved foliate candle sleeve. Twelve cream fabric bell shades with scalloped hems and gold braid trim sit on top, and large faceted crystal drops and beaded chains hang between the arms. A pointed leaf finial and crystal finish the base. The dark antique finish settles into every leaf, with warm gold catching only the raised edges.

Finding the right spot

At 42 inches across, the Baroque Foliage suits a dining table of 84 to 108 inches, or the centre of a drawing room or entrance hall of about 16 by 16 feet or more. Over a table, hang it so the lowest crystal sits 30 to 34 inches above the table top. Elsewhere, keep at least 7 feet of clearance below it. Use warm white (2700K) E14 candle LED bulbs on a dimmer for a soft glow through the shades.

Care

Switch off and let the bulbs cool before cleaning. Dust the brass with a soft, dry brush to reach into the leaves. Wipe the crystals with a barely damp lint-free cloth and dry them at once. Freshen the shades with a soft brush. Avoid metal polish, abrasives and chemical cleaners, which will strip the antique finish.

Before you order

This chandelier is made to order. It takes twelve E14 bulbs, which are not included, and comes with a 2-year warranty. It is delivered with its chain and canopy, and the crystals and shades are fitted on site. Production takes 10–14 days, followed by 4–6 days for delivery.
