The flaming torch held in a bracket is one of the oldest forms of wall light. Classical architects carved it into stone, and eighteenth-century makers cast it in gilt bronze, wrapping the shaft in acanthus leaves and setting a glass hurricane over the flame to keep it from the draught. It still lends a stairwell or a long hall the air of a great house.

The Ornate Torch is made in that tradition. A tapered brass torch rises from a scalloped shell backplate of acanthus leaves, and a flared hurricane of clear glass sits at the top around the bulb. Below, the torch ends in a cast leaf finial. The brass has an antique finish, darker in the leaves.

Finding the right spot

Use a pair either side of a foyer mirror, a grand doorway or a fireplace, or a row up a stairwell or along a long hall. Mount it with the glass about 72 to 78 inches above the floor. Use a clear warm white (2700K) E27 filament bulb.

Care

Switch off and let the bulb cool before cleaning. Dust the brass with a soft, dry brush to reach into the leaves. Wash the glass shade by hand once removed and dry it well. Avoid metal polish, abrasives and chemical cleaners, which will strip the antique finish.

This wall light is made to order. It takes one E27 bulb, which is not included, and comes with a 2-year warranty. Production takes 10–14 days, followed by 4–6 days for delivery.
