Before electric light, the gates and courtyards of Indian forts and havelis were lit by mashaals, torches set into iron brackets on the walls. The torch form has stayed with Indian outdoor lighting ever since, along with the pierced metal screens, or jaalis, that broke up the glare of the sun.

This torch brings the two together. A long backplate of pierced diamond filigree runs down the wall to a spear-point finial, and at the top an amber tinted glass shade holds the bulb like a flame. The frame is mild steel in a chocolate brown paint finish, and the amber glass gives a warm, low glow.

Finding the right spot

Use a pair either side of a main door or gate, or a row along a garden wall, a courtyard or a terrace. Mount it with the glass about 72 to 84 inches above the ground. It is best placed under an eave or a covered entrance, where it is protected from direct rain. Use a warm white (2700K) E27 bulb.

Care

Switch off and let the bulb cool before cleaning. Brush dust and leaves from the filigree with a soft, dry brush. Wipe the glass with a damp cloth and dry it. Touch up any chips in the paint to keep the steel protected outdoors.

This wall light is made to order. It takes one E27 bulb, which is not included, and comes with a 2-year warranty. Production takes 10–14 days, followed by 4–6 days for delivery.
