The urn is one of the oldest shapes in classical decoration. Neoclassical designers of the eighteenth century put it on mantelpieces, gateposts and the tops of clocks, and when oil lamps and then electric lamps came into the Victorian and Edwardian parlour, the brass urn became the natural base for them: weighty, polished, and handsome from every side. A brass urn under a fabric shade became the standard lamp of the sitting room, the club and the hotel lounge.

The Parlour is made in that spirit. A turned brass urn with a ringed neck and a domed shoulder sits on a stepped round base, and a slim brass stem rises from it to carry a tapered fabric shade. The brass has a warm antique finish. In our photographs it wears a plain tapered shade; in the Governess Parlour at The Governor House in Amritsar, it sits between the dining tables under a pleated shade with a frilled edge. The shade can be chosen to order.

Finding the right spot

At 30 inches tall, the Parlour suits a side table beside a sofa or armchair, a console, a desk, or a pair of bedside tables. On a side table of about 24 to 26 inches, the bottom of the shade sits near eye level for someone seated. Use a warm white (2700K) bulb.

Care

Switch off and let the bulb cool before cleaning. Dust the brass with a soft, dry cloth. Freshen the shade with a soft brush. Avoid metal polish, abrasives and chemical cleaners, which will strip the antique finish.

This table lamp is made to order. It takes one bulb, which is not included, and comes with a 2-year warranty. Production takes 10–14 days, followed by 4–6 days for delivery.
