Description

A Regency-style standard lamp: a slim fluted brass column with a cast Corinthian capital, standing on a three-lobed wooden base with cast brass scroll feet, under a fabric shade. As used in the Governess Parlour and Reading Room at The Governor House, Amritsar.

Bulb not included | 2-year warranty

In Regency England, in the years around 1800 to 1830, furniture makers borrowed freely from Greek and Roman architecture. Fluted columns, Corinthian capitals of acanthus leaves and three-legged bases with scrolled feet turned up on candlestands, torchères and tables. When electric light reached the drawing room at the end of the nineteenth century, those same forms were used for the first standard lamps: a classical column, raised on a tripod, carrying a fabric shade at reading height.

The Regent is made in that spirit. A slim brass column, fluted along its length, rises to a cast capital of curling acanthus leaves, with a turned brass collar above it to carry the shade. At the foot, a cast brass mount of scrolls and leaves spreads into three curling feet, set on a three-lobed base of dark polished wood. The brass is cast and finished in an antique tone, darker in the flutes and the leaves. In our photographs it wears a scalloped fabric shade; at The Governor House in Amritsar, where it stands in the Governess Parlour and the Reading Room, it wears a round pleated shade. The shade can be chosen to order.

Finding the right spot

At 71 inches tall, the Regent puts the light at reading height beside an armchair, a Chesterfield or the end of a sofa, or as a pair either side of a console, a doorway or a fireplace, as at The Governor House. Place it so the bottom of the shade sits just above the shoulder of someone seated. Use a warm white (2700K) bulb.

Care

Switch off and let the bulb cool before cleaning. Dust the brass with a soft, dry brush to reach into the flutes and the leaves. Wipe the wooden base with a dry cloth. Freshen the shade with a soft brush. Avoid metal polish, abrasives and chemical cleaners, which will strip the antique finish.

Before you order

This floor lamp is made to order. It takes one bulb, which is not included, and comes with a 2-year warranty. Production takes 10–14 days, followed by 4–6 days for delivery.
