The design

The surahi, the round-bellied water pot with a slender flared neck, has stood in Indian homes for centuries. Here its shape becomes the base of a lamp. The brass body is worked by hand in repoussé: the metal is beaten from behind to raise dense flowers, leaves and scrolling vines, then chased from the front to sharpen the detail. Bands of rope and leaf borders frame the belly and the neck.

Choose from two finishes. Antique Silver is cool and bright, with dark recesses and silvery highlights. Antique Gold is warm, with deep bronze recesses and gold rubbed onto the raised work. In both, the pattern reads clearly from across the room. A tapered empire shade in off-white linen, with fine, even knife pleats, softens the metal and spreads a warm, gentle light.

What makes it distinctive

• Real repoussé work. Every flower and leaf is raised by hand from a sheet of brass. The work is not cast or stamped.
• Two antique finishes. Silver or gold, each with dark recesses and bright highlights that give the metalwork depth.

Placement

A natural bedside lamp. At 22 inches, it sits at reading height beside most beds. It also suits a study desk, a side table next to an armchair, or a console in a formal living room alongside Indian art and metal objects. Use a pair either side of a bed or sofa for a classic, symmetrical look. Antique Silver suits cool greys, whites and blues; Antique Gold suits warm woods, leather and deep jewel tones.

Care

Dust the base with a soft, dry brush or cloth so the recesses stay clean. Do not polish the finish back; it is meant to stay dark in the recesses. Never use abrasive pads, metal polish, silver dip or chemical cleaners. Brush the shade lightly to remove dust.
