Stambha means pillar, and the deepa stambha is the tall lamp pillar that stands before a temple, its stem lined with small lamps. This wall light takes that idea and pares it right back: a single slender rod of brass, almost four feet tall, carrying two open bowls, a small one near the top and a larger one below. Each bowl is hand-etched on the outside with fine radiating ribs, like a seashell or the petals of a lotus, and the etched lines are darkened so the pattern reads from across the room.

Switched off, it is a piece of wall sculpture: one long vertical line, two curved forms, and the shadows they cast. Switched on, a G9 bulb in each bowl throws soft light up the wall, and in the larger bowl the light passes through a domed inner shade of hand-etched dots that sparkles like a field of tiny stars.

Finding the right spot

At 46 inches tall, Stambha wants height around it: a double-height wall, a stairwell, the side of a tall window or doorway, or a pair on either side of a console or bed in a room with a generous ceiling. Mount it with the large bowl at about 150 to 160 cm from the floor, which puts the top of the stem at roughly 210 cm. Because it projects 12 inches from the wall, keep it clear of walkways and door swings. For a warm glow, use warm white (2700K) G9 LED bulbs.

Care

Switch off at the mains and let the bulbs cool before cleaning. Dust with a soft, dry cloth or brush, following the etched lines. Avoid metal polish, abrasives and chemical cleaners, which will strip the antique finish.

Stambha is made to order and priced per light. It takes two G9 bulbs, which are not included, and comes with a 2-year warranty. Production takes 10–14 days, followed by 4–6 days for delivery.
