Verdigris is the soft blue-green that copper and bronze take on after years outdoors, seen on old church domes, garden statues and the lanterns of European town squares. Ironwork lanterns hung from scrolled brackets beside doorways and along arcades have lit entrances in that way for centuries.

The Verdigris takes its look from them. An elongated octagonal backplate carries a scrolled shepherd's-crook arm, from which the lantern hangs. Its crown is a ring of curled leaves and fleur-de-lis, its body a cylinder of clear glass panes in an arched, scrolled frame, and a scrolled finial finishes the base. It is made in mild steel and hand-finished in a mottled green patina, with darker tones showing through as on aged metal.

Finding the right spot

At 26 inches tall, it suits a front door of about 7 to 8 feet, a pair either side of a wide entrance, a gate pillar, or a covered verandah or terrace. Mount it so its centre sits about 6 to 6.5 feet above the floor. Indoors, it works in a hallway or a garden room. Use a warm white (2700K) filament bulb.

Care

Switch off and let the bulb cool before cleaning. Dust the frame with a soft brush, and wipe the glass with a barely damp cloth, then dry it. Avoid abrasive pads and chemical cleaners, which will damage the patina. The lantern is suited to covered and semi-covered outdoor positions; for a fully exposed wall, ask us about sealed fittings before ordering.

This wall lantern is made to order. It takes one E27 bulb, which is not included, and comes with a 2-year warranty. Production takes 10–14 days, followed by 4–6 days for delivery.
