Mid-century glassmakers loved to play with form: a lamp base did not have to be a plain cylinder or ball, but could swell and step like a stack of rings, so that the glass caught the light differently at every curve. Held on a simple brass foot and topped with a dark shade, such a base reads as a piece of glass sculpture on the table.

This lamp follows that idea. Its base is a rounded urn of clear glass, built up from bulging discs that sit one on another, so light ripples across each swell. A slim brass stem runs up through the centre from a round brass foot, both in a soft satin finish. Above, a black fabric drum shade gives a crisp outline and directs the light down onto the table.

Finding the right spot

At 30 inches tall, it suits a console or a wide side table, or a pair of bedside tables in a larger bedroom. Place it where light from a window or the room can pass through the glass base. On a side table of about 24 inches, the bottom of the shade sits near eye level for someone seated. Use a warm white (2700K) E27 bulb.

Care

Switch off and let the bulb cool before cleaning. Clean the glass with a glass cleaner or a damp cloth and dry it at once. Dust the brass with a soft, dry cloth, and freshen the shade with a soft brush. Avoid abrasives and harsh chemical cleaners on the brass.

This table lamp is made to order. It takes one E27 bulb, which is not included, and comes with a 2-year warranty. Production takes 10–14 days, followed by 4–6 days for delivery.
