In the nineteenth century, India's princely courts filled their durbar halls with cut glass: chandeliers, lanterns, even furniture, all made to catch every flicker of light. This lantern carries that tradition into the modern home.

At the top, a crown of ribbed glass leaves fans out like the petals of a lotus around a fan-cut glass cup. Below hangs a tall cylinder of thick, clear glass, cut by hand with bands of fine diamond cutting and bold starbursts, held between a polished brass rim and a wide brass band. A diamond-cut glass bowl tapers to a pointed glass drop. Inside, a slim brass frame holds the lights, so when it is switched on the cuts throw a scatter of sparkles across the walls and ceiling.

Finding the right spot

Hang it in an entrance hall, a stairwell, a long gallery or above a round centre table. Where people walk beneath it, keep the bottom of the lantern at least 210 cm above the floor, which suits ceilings of about 11 ft and above; over a table, hang it 75 to 90 cm above the top. Tell us your ceiling height and we will set the drop to suit. Use warm white (2700K) LED bulbs for the best sparkle.

Care

Switch off at the mains and let the bulbs cool before cleaning. Clean the glass with glass cleaner sprayed onto a soft cloth, never directly onto the lantern, then dry it so no spots remain. Dust the brass with a soft, dry cloth. Avoid abrasives and chemical cleaners on the brass.

This lantern is made to order and priced per piece. Bulbs are not included, and it comes with a 2-year warranty. Production takes 10–14 days, followed by 4–6 days for delivery.
