Under Napoleon, French designers borrowed the symbols of imperial Rome: the eagle, the laurel, the urn and the ribbon-tied swag. Gilt bronze makers cast them into clocks, candelabra and wall lights for the palaces of the Empire, and the style spread across Europe and, later, to the grand houses and government buildings of British India.

The Empire wall lantern brings those symbols together. A crown of cast brass rises to an eagle with spread wings, hung with ribbon swags, above an urn-shaped body of cut glass that sparkles when the bulb inside is lit. Below, the lantern narrows to a pointed cast brass finial. The cast brass carries an aged patina, darker in the recesses of the casting.

Finding the right spot

Use a pair either side of a foyer mirror, a doorway, a fireplace or a portrait, or a row up a stairwell. Mount it with the centre of the glass about 66 to 72 inches above the floor. Use a clear warm white (2700K) E14 bulb so the cuts in the glass catch the light.

Care

Switch off and let the bulb cool before cleaning. Dust the brass with a soft, dry brush to reach into the casting. Wipe the glass with a barely damp cloth and dry it at once. Avoid metal polish, abrasives and chemical cleaners, which will strip the patina.

Before you order

This wall lantern is made to order. It takes one E14 bulb, which is not included, and comes with a 2-year warranty. Production takes 10–14 days, followed by 4–6 days for delivery.
