In the workshops of Florence in the mid-twentieth century, metalworkers revived an old Italian craft: tole, sheet metal cut by hand, hammered into shape and painted or gilded. Their leaf chandeliers, sconces and lanterns, with fronds of gilt metal curling around glass and light, became one of the signatures of Italian decoration and were shipped to villas, hotels and grand hallways across Europe and America. The style is known simply as Florentine.

The Fiorentina is made in that tradition. Six panels of clear glass form a tall hexagonal lantern. Over the top, large acanthus leaves cut from sheet metal curl up and outward like a crown, with smaller fronds tucked between them. Each corner post is dressed with a running leaf, and below the glass a cage of scrolled metal gathers into a cluster of leaves and a turned finial. The metal is mild steel, hand-finished in an antique gold paint that is darker in the curls of the leaves.

Finding the right spot

At 18 inches across, the Fiorentina suits an entrance hall, a stair landing or a passage, a covered porch or verandah, or a pair along a corridor. Hung over a round hall table, it should sit with its lowest point 30 to 34 inches above the table top. Where people walk beneath, keep at least 7 feet of clearance. It is made for indoor and covered spaces, not for open weather. Use a clear warm white (2700K) E27 filament bulb, so the glow shows through the glass and catches the inside of the leaves.

Care

Switch off and let the bulb cool before cleaning. Dust the leaves with a soft, dry brush. Clean the glass with a barely damp cloth, then dry it at once. Keep water off the painted metal, and avoid polish, abrasives and chemical cleaners, which will damage the antique gold finish.

This lantern is made to order. It takes one E27 bulb, which is not included, and comes with a 2-year warranty. It is delivered with its chain and canopy. Production takes 10–14 days, followed by 4–6 days for delivery.
