Description
A tall hexagonal hall lantern in an antique gold finish: six glass panels under a crown of gilt leaf finials, with a leafy collar and a long tapering base. As hung over the Council Chamber table at The Governor House, Amritsar.
Bulbs not included | 2-year warranty
In the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, the great houses of England were lit at the door and on the stair by hall lanterns: tall glazed cages of metal, hung on a chain, that kept candle flames safe from the draughts of an opening door. The form travelled with the British to India, into the government houses, circuit houses and clubs of the Raj, where hexagonal lanterns with gilt crowns hung down long corridors and over council tables.
The Governor takes its name from one of those buildings. At The Governor House in Amritsar, an 1863 circuit house that once lodged the governors of the East India Company and was restored as a restaurant by Renesa Architecture Studio, a line of these lanterns hangs over the long table of the Council Chamber. Six clear glass panels form the body. Above them, a crown of gilt leaf finials and scrolls rises to a central spire, and each corner post is dressed with a running leaf. Below the glass, a collar of leaves and small drop finials gathers into a long, tapering pointed base. Inside, three candle lights stand on a central stem. The frame is mild steel, hand-finished in an antique gold paint, darker in the recesses of the leaves.

Finding the right spot
The Governor is made for height: a double-height entrance hall, a stairwell, a long corridor, or a row of two or three over a long dining or boardroom table, as in the Council Chamber at The Governor House. Over a table, hang it so the point of the base sits 30 to 34 inches above the table top; for a row, space the lanterns about 4 to 5 feet apart. Where people walk beneath, keep at least 7 feet of clearance. It is made for indoor and covered spaces. Use clear warm white (2700K) E14 candle bulbs on a dimmer.
Care
Switch off and let the bulbs cool before cleaning. Dust the leaves with a soft, dry brush. Clean the glass with a barely damp cloth, then dry it at once. Keep water off the painted metal, and avoid polish, abrasives and chemical cleaners, which will damage the antique gold finish.

This lantern is made to order. It takes three E14 bulbs, which are not included, and comes with a 2-year warranty. It is delivered with its chain and canopy. Production takes 10–14 days, followed by 4–6 days for delivery.
