In the merchant houses and churches of the seventeenth-century Netherlands, the brass chandelier was a mark of prosperity. Its signature was a large, polished brass ball at the base of the stem. Far from being decoration alone, the ball worked as a mirror, catching every candle flame and throwing the light back around the room. These chandeliers appear again and again in Dutch paintings of the period, glowing above tiled floors and long tables.

The Prism Drift takes that Dutch form and dresses it in later Baroque detail. A turned brass column carries a smaller ball above and a great ball below, finished with a turned drop. Eight long S-curved arms sweep out in the lower tier, each with a cast acanthus leaf running along its spine, and four shorter scrolled arms rise in the tier above. Every arm ends in a turned cup hung with faceted crystal pendeloques and a cream fabric shade, scalloped at the hem and edged in gold braid, which softens the twelve bulbs into a warm, even glow.

Finding the right spot

At 42 inches across, the Prism Drift suits a dining table of 84 to 108 inches, or the centre of a drawing room, library or entrance hall of about 16 by 16 feet or more. Over a table, hang it so the lowest crystal sits 30 to 34 inches above the table top. Elsewhere, keep at least 7 feet of clearance below it. Use warm white (2700K) E14 candle LED bulbs on a dimmer.

Care

Switch off and let the bulbs cool before cleaning. Dust the brass with a soft, dry brush to reach into the leaves, and wipe the balls with a soft dry cloth. Wipe the crystals with a barely damp lint-free cloth and dry them at once. Freshen the shades with a soft brush. Avoid metal polish, abrasives and chemical cleaners, which will strip the antique finish.

Before you order

This chandelier is made to order. It takes twelve E14 bulbs, which are not included, and comes with a 2-year warranty. It is delivered with its chain and canopy, and the crystals and shades are fitted on site. Production takes 10–14 days, followed by 4–6 days for delivery.
