Toledo, in central Spain, has been famous for its metalwork for centuries. Its blacksmiths forged the great iron screens, gates and lanterns of Spanish cathedrals and palaces, heating and bending iron into scrolls, curls and leaves by hand. The style travelled across the Mediterranean, to the villas of Tuscany and the haciendas of the New World, where tall iron chandeliers hung in the double-height halls. To soften the black iron, craftsmen often rubbed gold onto its edges, so the scrolls caught the candlelight.

This chandelier carries that tradition. Its frame is made of mild steel, painted black and brushed by hand with hints of gold, so it reads as aged wrought iron. Tall heart-shaped scrolls rise from a turned central column in three tiers, each arm ending in a leafy candle cup. Twenty-one small bell shades in ivory fabric, each with a scalloped hem trimmed in gold embroidery, soften the light, and clear crystal drops and rosettes hang from the scrolls. At five feet across and seven feet tall, it is made to fill a double-height space.

Finding the right spot

Toledo is made for a double-height entrance hall, a stairwell or a double-height living room with a ceiling of 18 feet or more. Hang it centred in the space, with the bottom at least 8 feet above the floor, or level with the first-floor gallery so it can be seen from above and below. It suits a hall of about 20 by 20 feet or larger. The chain is cut to your ceiling, so tell us the drop you need. Use warm white (2700K) LED bulbs, and add a dimmer for evenings.

Care

Switch off and let the bulbs cool before cleaning. Dust the frame with a soft, dry cloth or brush. Freshen the fabric shades with a soft brush or a vacuum on low with a brush attachment. Wipe the crystals with a barely damp, lint-free cloth and dry them. Never use abrasive pads or chemical cleaners, which will strip the hand-brushed finish.

Toledo is made to order and priced per piece. It takes 21 bulbs, which are not included, and comes with a 2-year warranty. Production takes 10–14 days, followed by 4–6 days for delivery. A chandelier of this size is delivered in parts and assembled on site.
