The great houses of eighteenth-century France and England lit their entrance halls and staircases with glazed lanterns. A tall cylinder of glass protected the candles from the draught of the front door and the stairwell, while the metal frame around it became a piece of decoration in its own right. French makers in the reign of Louis XVI dressed these hall lanterns with crisp classical ornament: acanthus leaves, scrolled crowns and fluted, beaded bands.

The Pavilion follows that pattern. A single curved glass cylinder is held between four slim posts, each mounted top and bottom with cast acanthus leaves. Above, a cast band with crested cartouches carries four tall scrolling arms that rise to the crown and chain. Below, a deep band with beaded edges and vertical fluting closes the lantern. Inside stands a cast candelabra of nine candle lights. The frame is cast in aluminium, so it holds fine detail while staying lighter to hang than solid metal, and is finished in an antique gold paint that settles darker into the recesses.

Finding the right spot

Hang the Pavilion in an entrance foyer, a stair hall or a gallery with a ceiling of at least 12 feet, keeping the bottom about 7.5 feet above the floor so people walk comfortably beneath it. In a double-height hall, hang it lower on a longer chain so it sits in the middle of the space. The chain is cut to your ceiling, so tell us the drop you need. Use warm white (2700K) E14 candle LED bulbs, and add a dimmer.

Care

Switch off and let the bulbs cool before cleaning. Dust the frame with a soft, dry brush. Clean the glass with glass cleaner sprayed onto a lint-free cloth, never directly onto the lantern. Never use abrasive pads or chemical cleaners on the painted finish.

Before you order

The Pavilion is made to order and priced per piece. It takes nine E14 bulbs, which are not included, and comes with a 2-year warranty. Production takes 10–14 days, followed by 4–6 days for delivery.
